If you’ve ever been curious about Cacao Ceremonies, what they are, how they work, and how to prepare for your first one, this guide will walk you through every step.
A Cacao Ceremony is a sacred, heart-opening ritual that combines mindful intention, meditation, and the ancient tradition of drinking ceremonial-grade cacao. It’s more than a simple gathering; it’s a journey of connection, gratitude, and emotional healing.
How My Journey with Cacao Began
My first cacao ceremony was a truly magical and transformative experience. It opened my heart in a way I’d never felt before, deeply connecting me to myself and to others after years of feeling disconnected and lost in cycles of self-sabotage.
But not every ceremony I attended after that carried the same level of care and intention. That contrast inspired me to become a qualified Cacao Ceremony facilitator, to honour this ancient tradition in a way that feels meaningful, grounded, and filled with love.
How I Prepare for a Cacao Ceremony

The Day Before
Preparation begins the day before the ceremony. I start by making the cacao using ceremonial-grade cacao sourced from Peru or Guatemala. It’s carefully grated, blended slowly with organic milk or spiced Indian chai, and infused with intention and gratitude.
On the Day
I arrive a couple of hours before the ceremony begins. The preparation includes:
Clearing the energy of the space by burning sage or palo santo
Setting up a sacred altar, honouring Mother Nature, the elements, and the energy of the cacao
Grounding myself, so I can hold space for everyone who attends
This gentle ritual creates a sanctuary of peace and heartfelt energy before the first guest even arrives.
What Happens During the Ceremony
Every ceremony flows gently, weaving together moments of reflection, connection, and community.

1. Opening the Circle
We begin by introducing ourselves and sharing our intentions. This sets the tone for openness, safety, and togetherness.
2. Heart-Centred Meditation
I guide everyone through a grounding meditation, helping us connect to our breath, our heart, and the collective energy of the group.
3. The Ancient Story of Cacao
I share a little ancient wisdom about cacao, known as Theobroma cacao, or “food of the gods.”Cherished by the Mayan and Aztec civilisations as early as 1900 BC, cacao was seen as sacred medicine, used to open the heart, expand consciousness, and restore harmony.
4. Honouring the Cacao
Before drinking, we bless the cacao with a moment of gratitude, sometimes through soft chanting, singing, or simply silence. Each person is invited to close their eyes, hold their cup to their heart, and ask: “What does my heart need in this moment?”
As we sip slowly, we honour the earth, the farmers, and the lineage of this plant medicine that connects us all.
5. Releasing and Inviting
While drinking cacao, we focus on gently letting go of what no longer serves us and inviting in what we wish to welcome into our lives: love, joy, peace, or renewal.
6. Movement and Sound
After the meditation, we bring in gentle somatic movement, tapping, or drumming to help the energy of cacao move through the body, awakening flow, presence, and grounded vitality.
7. Closing the Ceremony
We end with a prayer to the Four Directions, a beautiful indigenous tradition that honours the Earth and the energies around us. Then, in stillness, we reflect, share, and connect, heart to heart, with space for conversation, questions, and quiet gratitude.
Why Cacao Ceremonies Are So Transformative
A cacao ceremony is not just about drinking cacao; it’s about creating a sacred pause. It’s an invitation to slow down, listen to your heart, and reconnect with the deeper layers of yourself.
This gentle, mindful ritual helps:
Open the heart chakra
Release emotional blockages
Cultivate gratitude and connection
Restore balance and inner peace
When shared in a safe and nurturing space, the effects are profound, leaving you feeling lighter, more open, and deeply connected.
“Each ceremony is an act of love, for yourself, for the earth, and for the collective heart of everyone in the room.”- Lisa, Happy Mat Yoga
